August is peak u-pick season around Washtenaw County, and it’s one of the easiest ways to turn a Saturday morning into a full family outing — no reservations, no ticket prices beyond what you pick, just a bucket and a field. Here’s where to go, organized by what’s actually ready to pick this month.

U-Pick Blueberries

Blueberry season runs mid-July through mid-August, so you’ve still got a window. Blueville Acres Blueberry Farm in Belleville is a no-spray, natural-practice farm with bushes dating back to 1968 — it’s u-pick only, no pre-picked option, so plan on getting your hands (and probably your kids’ faces) blue. Dexter Blueberry Farm is even more single-minded about it: blueberries are the only thing they grow. It’s $2.75/lb, u-pick only, and worth calling ahead (734-426-2900) since the season is short — about six weeks from July.

U-Pick Flowers

If your kids would rather build a bouquet than eat their harvest, two farms have you covered through early September. Green Things Farm Collective in Ann Arbor runs a U-Pick Flower CSA through September 4th — you show up weekly and cut your own bouquet from their fields. Raindance Organic Farm in Whitmore Lake, a woman-owned certified organic flower farm on 44 acres, holds u-pick flower events July through September alongside their regular bouquet subscriptions — a nice one for a slower afternoon.

U-Pick Sunflowers, Strawberries, and More

Jacob’s Fresh Farm in Dexter is the most kid-friendly stop on this list — over the season they offer u-pick strawberries, lavender, sunflowers, and eventually pumpkins, so there’s almost always something in bloom or in reach for small hands. Their strawberries wrap up earlier in the summer, but sunflowers are typically an August highlight.

A few more farms mix u-pick into a broader CSA or vegetable operation, so it’s worth calling ahead to see what’s currently open to pick: Tantre Farm in Chelsea offers u-pick alongside their vegetables, fruit, and mushrooms, and Slow Farm Organic just north of Ann Arbor runs u-pick as part of their CSA and Saturday farmstand. Wasem Fruit Farm in Milan is better known for u-pick apples and raspberries later in the season, but it’s a good one to bookmark for September.

Tips for a Smoother Trip

Most of these farms post current picking conditions on their website or Facebook page before you drive out — always check same-day, since weather and demand can close a field early. Bring your own containers if a farm doesn’t provide buckets, wear clothes you don’t mind staining, and bring cash for the smaller operations that don’t take cards.
